New Orleans Update
Submitted by aaron on Mon, 11/14/2005 - 5:41pm. CounterCurrentCoalition | SPAZAfter two and a half weeks in the New Orleans area, the Counter Current
Coalition is still busy, productive and trying to keep up with the constantly
evolving atmosphere. The seemingly endless destruction and desolation of the
city remains while our localized efforts show more noticeable results and
changes occuring....

The kitchen and distribution center at Common Ground in the
ninth ward have seen more and more people as residents return, even though
there is still no power. We continue to help out where we can with different
residents we meet that need a hand, and Mama Dee in the seventh ward always
has plenty of work to be done, and they sure know how to have a good time
after a days work there, with some good cookin and music (we are going to show
a documentary about the second line tradition there tonight). After some
threats from the NOLA police and other "officials" the Rainbow Welcome Home
kitchen is still going strong till tentatively the first week of december,
then they will probably move to another spot. A portion of the group went
down to the native community of Point Au Chene, a bayou shrimping and fishing
area south west of new orleans. We dropped off a bus load of supplies, met a
bunch of cajun locals, got on a shrimp boat at 5 am and barbecued fresh
seafood wonders, and were heading back down with more supplies and a work crew
for a few days at least, another bus might stay down there for longer.
Another truck load of supplies and volunteers made it down from the Bay (yay!)
and are sorting themselves out a bit now.
The SPAZ bus has to leave for NYC pretty soon, but the other bus will be
around for a bit longer. There are a number of people who have already
decided to stay down here and continue efforts even after the buses leave, and
with some other people who were already down here, are looking for a space to
have a base of operations for existing projects and to develop new ones.
Hopefully that will all work out soon and will be a great possibility for
people to come down in the future and get involved in different things.
Anyhow, its always hard to put down to words everything in the air and streets
down here, especially when half the time you sit down at the computer to try
the power goes out for however long, but it is a very unique time and place in
this coutry right now, the possibilities for creative folks to contribute are
endless and the need wont dissipate any time soon.
Well, thats it for now, check out the newer pictures (sorry they have been
lacking for a while, not my fault), and ...peace out.
Thanks for all the support.
