Report from Earthquake Epicenter, Bantul, Java

| |

Here is the latest report from Rehane at ground zero during the May 27 earthquake, "It is taking time to fully comprehend what has happened to us. We have been in a hotel since Saturday. Our area of Bantul was worst affected. For those of you that have been to the house - No-e's house in the ricefields outside Jogja- the kitchen is completely collapsed, the walls are cracked, xhunks fell out of the roof... we can't live there. Our neighbours are in far worse positions. Some houses are completely flattened. We are terrified that another quake will hit. All little noises and wobbles scare us. The volcano is 4 times as active as before. People are sleeping outside under tarpaulins. It's been raining too... On the positive side!!! The response to the tragedy has been amazing. People have organised themselves into anarchic bands of first aiders, relief workers carrying food and tents and help. It's amazing how the local people are rallying to help each other. There are communal kitchens everywhere. Circle and I have been helping as much as we can. The help must keep going for the next few months. People are homeless - So are we! Tomorrow we go to Anas' (an arist living in Ubud) exhibition opening in Bali. There we chill and start to plan our future for the next week. I am planning trauma healing arts workshops for kids. Drama and a bit of storytelling dahlings! Fabulous - those kiddies will be making musicals about it all in no time. The kiddies are well freaked. It's deeply traumatic as you can well imagine! Strange apocalyotic scenes in the city and dream sequences - circle and i walking really slowly through rice fields with the villagers to escape the rumoured tsunami. Hundreds of families carrying their old out of doors for the first time in months maybe years. Send LIGHT, Send Love, weave a network of light around us all. Sing the earth back down... Love you, rehane we have set up a paypal account at https://www.13c.com/aid it's just a donation button at the mo, but I, no.e sunflowrfish, will wire the money directly to rehane in Bantul, and then also spend 2 months in Bantul doing whatever i can. I leave July 3. chek the gallery named Java for pre quake community photos, and stay tuned for updated reports and photos .. damai (peace) no.e

More News from Bantul, Java by Linda Kaun

In 57 seconds - 7 days ago the earth shuddered and shook with a violent force - walls collapsed, bricks and red-tile roofs smashed down on those trapped inside and 3,968 people died in the Bantul regency alone. 80% of it was reduced to piles of rubble.(The Yogyakarta province is shaped like a huge triangle with the volcano, Mt. Merapi at the top point. The city of Yogya sits in the middle and the base at the bottom is called Bantul.) In all over 6,000 have died so far including 1,668 in Klaten, near Prambanan and 165 in the city of Yogya itself. Thousands of people are still sleeping outside, in makeshift camps under plastic tarps or cardboard, wearing the only clothes they own. Some huddled under umbrellas in the rain that fell during three nights...sleeping on the paths between rice paddies, on top of narrow irrigation ditches. Many have eaten almost nothing in these 7 days or are living on packets of instant noodles. There is no electricity, cooking fuel, or pans to cook in. Clean water is scarce, sanitation a problem. ISN'T THE GOVERNMENT DOING ANYTHING? Yes, both foreign and domestic aid is being distributed. But the logistics are staggering to reach each person who needs help. HERE'S THE PROBLEM... LOOKS ARE DECEIVING. The tropical dazzle of rice fields and palm trees hides hundreds of small subsistence farming villages. 1.68 million people live on 197 sq. miles in the hardest hit area of Bantul. Thousands of tiny hamlets of rural simplicity - and poverty - are densely packed into the limestone hills, twisting up cobblestone and dirt roads from the rice-growing plains. The aid trucks rumble along the overcrowded two-lane main road and are doing the best they can. But hundreds of villages back up in the hills have not been contacted at all or maybe once given 10 pounds of rice for several families to live on. Some of the big trucks can't even get into the remotest areas. People are afraid to leave their homes unguarded for fear of looting. There is no gasoline for the motorbikes or trucks. Many are still recovering from wounds and cant walk. With 851 aftershocks in six days, the fear and shock of all thats happened has left them desperate and traumatized. URGENT HELP IS NEEDED! The needs are long-term and you have many ways to make a donation to this earthquake relief...if that's what you feel called to do. HERE'S HOW YOU CAN HELP US BRING THEM IMMEDIATE RELIEF... If you want to help us out right away, you can make a donation at https://www.13c.com/aid I thank you in advance for any help you can give. It all adds up. The need is great and a little money can go a long way here
